The 9th Annual Balloons and Varooms Festival was a success this past Memorial day weekend, although there were many doubts with winds blowing at 60MPH all throughout Friday and Saturday. Early Sunday morning the many pilots and spectators stood anxiously in the cold watching as the test balloon went up in success. Gary Woods, festival founder and longtime local balloonist and master, stated the winds had stayed consistent all throughout the night, and that in all his years of ballooning, he knew it was a perfect morning to go up. 7 bright and colorful balloons gave sight to the early morning Ridgway locals, and many of the balloons went up for 4 or more hops. It was an experience to remember for those who got to go up, with breathtaking mountain views and a feeling of serenity as you gently drifted over one of the most scenic and photographed areas in the world.
