Don’t miss one of Western Colorado’s most scenic events. On May 25th-27th be sure to be in Ridgway, Colorado to witness the colorful hot air balloons and beautiful classic cars amidst the majestic San Juan Mountains. Experience the magnificence of over 20 hot air balloons ascending over the valley of Ridgway, and an auto show featuring over 100 classic autos from all over the region. Featured downtown in Ridgway’s Hartwell Town Park, there will be many booths showcasing jewelry and art, and also many local businesses offering a variety of snacks and brews. This is during graduation weekend for many, so bring the family guests down for a watch or ride before the big celebration. Start the morning off with the lift off on Saturday, May 26th at 7:00am. Then enjoy a pancake breakfast to get you going for the day at the Ridgway Firehouse. There will be tethered balloon rides, a car show cruise, and live music each evening featuring Ralph Dinosaur on Friday night and a number of other local bands and artists on Saturday and Sunday night. Take a break from the frivolity on Friday night and watch the Balloon Glow a half an hour after sunset, then soak the night away in your own private hot tub here at the Chipeta. Love Your Valley Music & Brew Fest

Next Saturday, May 19, 2012, look to spend a day at the park in beautiful Ridgway, Colorado. The Love Your Valley Music and Brew Festival of 2012 is being held downtown in Ridgway, Colorado’s Hartwell Park, only a few blocks from our beautiful resort here at the Chipeta. Book your room now as we’re filling up quick. Spend your day accompanied by good friends and family, with food and fun for everyone. The event is held in honor of the city of Ridgway, whom every summer hosts free concerts in the park on Thursdays. To fund these free concerts in the park, Ridgway first holds events each year such as this year’s Love Your Valley Fest. The event is free, with booths scattered throughout the park offering a variety of snacks and microbrews. There are also a variety of activities to choose from, ranging from children activities to dog obstacles. Live music is preformed by Shed, a band forged in 1999, whom mixes electronic and acoustic sounds and is still creating new songs and producing videos. The event is only $20 per person, and those over 21 are welcome to try the number of different popular brews offered from several regional breweries, some of which being Telluride Brewery, New Belgium, Ska, Steamworks, Colorado Boy Brewery, Silverton, Ouray, Durango Brewery and many more. After this event, come for the free Music in the Park Concert Series happening every Thursday evening in July, featuring a variety of talented and well known artists ranging from bluegrass, folk, funk, swing, country, alt-country, jazz, and any combination of those styles! The Love Your Valley Music and Brew Fest runs from 1:00pm to 6:00pm on Saturday May 19th. Come spend a day in Southwest Colorado to sample and enjoy everything this festival has to offer!

Box Cañon Falls

One of Ouray, Colorado’s most natural wonders is opening again for the season on Friday, May 11. This breathtaking waterfall and park is a must-see for anyone visiting the Ridgway/Ouray area. Formed when the rushing waters of Canyon Creek eroded a deep and narrow box canyon through fault weakened limestone, the park’s short trails are easily accessible and offer a genuine mountain adventure for all levels of hikers. The lower trail, an easy 500-feet hike via a walkway and suspension bridge, will lead you straight into the belly of the falls. You will be silenced by roaring water as the force of thousands of gallons a minute ricochet off a mix of rugged crags and smoothly eroded pre-Cambrian rock, rushing eighty feet to the canyon’s bottom. In 2001, Box Cañon Falls was designated as an important bird watching area by the National Audubon Society. It supports one of the state’s largest populations of Black Swifts, a protected species. These birds nest in their preferred habitat— the canyon walls sheltered by overhanging rocks near waterfalls. For the respect of these birds, dogs are not allowed on the trails. There is a small admission to the Park. Fees are $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for children (5-12 years) and $3.00 for seniors (65+). The trails and visitor’s center will be open daily through October, and the hours are 9 am to 6 PM in May, 8 am to 8 pm daily from Memorial Day week-end through Labor Day week-end , and 8 am to dusk after Labor Day.

End of Ski Season

The last day of Ski Season for Telluride, Colorado was held on this past Easter Sunday, April 8th. Many locals came out in costumes to enjoy those last few turns on the steep and beautiful slopes of Mountain Village. Easter egg hunts and an end of season festival took place to celebrate the end of yet another incredible winter at Telluride Ski Resort. As usual, the world-class resort had a successfully powder-filled season of skiing, snowboarding and awe-inspiring mountain views. Come summer, the resort transforms into a North American icon of music and events—home to world famous festivals, including events such as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Mountainfilm in Telluride, Telluride Wine Festival, and the Telluride Film Festival. In addition to their summer festival calendar, Telluride is a veritable playground for those who love the great outdoors. Many activities are offered ranging from rock climbing to glider rides, to a scenic gondola ride from the town of Telluride to Mountain Village, or vice versa. Koto Street Dance

Every year Telluride Colorado hosts the annual apres-winter block party held on the last Friday of the ski season. Telluride closes Main St. for live music, dancing, and a beer garden. The event has always been sponsored by the local radio station KOTO, which has been legally broadcasting since October 3, 1975. The radio station has been entirely supported by the greater Telluride community, in an elite club that includes only six other stations nationwide. Every year KOTOfm community radio invites everyone to “celebrate the season and show us your pink” at their FREE end-of-season Pink Flamingo Street Dance. The party has always featured the great Ralph Dinosaur and his Fabulous Volcanoes, following the vibrant opening acts of emerging local bands. The always-colorful Ralph Dinosaur has been rocking the Western Slope for over 30 years, and the Volcanoes’ custom blend of classic rock always gets crowds on their feet. The event includes costume contests, prizes and more. This year the street block party was a huge success with many people breaking it down and enjoying the historic town of Telluride, not to mention the dramatic beauty of the high mountains cowering overhead. There is no other way to celebrate the end of yet another fabulous winter and ski season in Telluride, Colorado.

Spring has officially sprung. The grass is greening and the buds on the trees are itching to bloom. The mountains are glistening white and the rivers are starting to flow.
