The Adobe Inn

Featured in our packages for the winter season and representing some of the most tasty Mexican food in the area, the Adobe Inn Cantina is a must stop for any hungry tourist or anyone visiting the Ridgway area. Their mix of ingredients and preparation results in some uncommonly good dishes. Their southwestern decor and intimate setting makes for an unbeatable ambiance as you look out the windows at the surrounding mountains. Each meal is first served with their delicious basket of corn and flour tortilla chips and homemade salsa. For an entree, a good crispy chili relleno is very popular here at the Adobe. With every main course you are given the options of side dishes, in which their tostadas are very delicious, topped with locally grown Anasazi beans, shredded cheese, and lettuce and guacamole, all sitting in a crispy fried flour tortilla shell. Their corn casserole is made with organic cornmeal and best described as heavenly. The Adobe is an excellent dining establishment, be sure to ask for directions during your next stay with us. 2012 makes it an amazing thirteen years that the Chicks with Picks women’s ice climbing clinics have been kicking the axe in Ouray, Colorado as the premier Chicks Climbing program. Teaching women of all ages how to rock and ice climb, their clinics cater to women of all abilities and many one-time newbie Chicks return year after year to continue developing and improving on what they’ve learned. The Chicks with Picks create a super fun, safe and supportive atmosphere as their intensive 2, 3 and 4-day clinics offer an intimate 4-to-1 ratio that focuses on taking your climbing to the next level. At their clinics one gains the technical skills and confidence to be a more self-reliant climber and equal climbing partner on rock or ice. The participants become skilled climbers who often return year after year to hone their skills. They take away more from the experience than they could ever imagine. It moves, changes and motivates women to move through perceived limitations and follow their dreams. Over the past 12 years the Chicks with Picks have raised over $155,000 for local women’s shelters as well as $9,500 in support of the Ouray Ice Park which makes these clinics possible. Opportunities for winter sport activities are still abundant in and around the Ridgway area, despite the high temperatures we’ve experienced this winter. Ouray has a variety of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails, almost all of which have been winter permitting thus far. The possibilities are endless going North or South, and recently we indulged in the snow the Grand Mesa had to offer. The Grand Mesa is located in the mountains between Hotchkiss and Cedaredge, and offers a great playground for snowshoeing. The 8th annual CoolSculptUSA snow sculpting competition was held this past weekend in Mountain Village, Colorado. The sculptors came out and endured the cold days and nights to reach their deadline on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The sculptures show true artist creativity and fantastic works of the imagination, with such ideas created as a young child screaming while sledding and an armored polar bear king, all made out of huge 8 square foot cubes of snow. Ouray Ice Fest

Ice climbing enthusiasts from all around the county gathered together this past weekend for the 17th annual Ouray Ice Festival. It has been known as the biggest ice festival in North America. People came to enjoy speed climbing, difficulty courses from novice to the most advanced, ice climbing clinics and slack line walking. Festival events were held in and around the Ouray Ice Park, located in the Uncompahgre Gorge in Ouray, Colorado. The town was packed for the weekend with ice climbers, gear manufacturers, and ice climbing enthusiasts. We enjoyed watching climbers navigate their axes and traverse the canyon walls. The park is man-made and all parts of the gorge have been polished by water over the years. It is maintained by expert ice climbers to make sure there’s safe and quality ice for people to enjoy. It’s something for everyone to check out even if it’s just for the scenery or to watch people accomplish amazing feats.

Winter Nordic Trails

Ouray County is a perfect playground for winter sport activities. Within walking distance of town numerous trails provide cross country skiing and snowshoeing access, to take in the charm of our beautiful valley blanketed in snow. A short drive in either direction will open up more challenging winter backcountry terrain along with miles of groomed Nordic track. Clear, deep blue skies prevail at the beginning of this New Year, making for great opportunities to go snowshoeing or cross country skiing in the snow of your choice. When route finding which way you wish to go, always keep in mind that not all roads and trails are maintained in the winter. Even though this requires a longer trek into a trailhead or destination, it can be a benefit to winter enthusiasts. Many of the unplowed dirt roads make for excellent skiing and snowshoeing, and lead unto views you’d never see before. A variety of these trails are as follows: Uncompaghre River Walk, Ice Park Trail, Amphitheater, Oak Creek/Silvershield, Lee’s Ski Hill, Red Mountain Pass, San Juan Hut System, Miller Mesa Road, East Dallas Road, and many more. There are also many groomed nordic skiing trails. Ironton is an example of a trail maintained by the Ouray County Nordic Council, groomed with set Nordic track. The trail glides past the historic ghost town of Ironton. Top of the Pines is another great enduring trail, groomed primarily for skate skiing, with spectacular vistas in all directions. And if you’re looking for just a quick practice run, the Nordic Council has just recently implanted a loop around the soccer fields in downtown Ridgway, right across the street from our beautiful resort here at the Chipeta. The loop in the park makes for a great outing activity and exercise for locals, as well as all the skiing enthusiasts who visit us here at our resort. Telluride Ski Resort

Telluride ski resort is among one of the top activities of choice during the winter months when living in or visiting the Ridgway/Ouray area. Telluride’s spectacular scenery is undeniably some of the most beautiful in the Rockies, and the ski experience offers a genuine mountain adventure for all levels of skiers, thanks to a mix of quality terrain at all points on the mountain. From refined groomed runs to challenging moguls, there truly is something for everyone. Recently we paid our first visit of the season to the resort, with an excellent outcome. The weather stayed at a constant sunny 37° the entire day, and a base of 31. We spent most of our time on the Galloping Goose trail, a personal favorite being more of casual skiers, which was groomed top to bottom that day. We enjoyed the big smooth turns that seemed as if they could go on forever, and the opportunity to turn off at many spots if we decided to take a more challenging route. And at any time you need a break, there are a various amount of restaurants and cafes to chose from. We shared a massive homemade nutella crepe from an outdoor kiosk. Telluride Ski Resort is a beautiful playground and atmosphere to escape to on any day off work. It is also a great option for this upcoming New Years Eve! Every year skiers carry torches down the Mountain, and then there is a remarkable firework show.
