Hiking

Trailing in San Juan region are varied and vast. They often lead to the tops of peaks, where an entire panorama of mountains are at your feet.

Jeep Tours

One of the most popular ways to see the San Juan Mountains is with an all-day or half-day guided scenic Jeep tour. Each guided mountain tour quickly climbs into the majestic landscapes of Yankee Boy, Imogene Pass, Alpine Loop, Engineer, Corkscrew, Black Bear Pass and many more.

 

Guided Fishing Excursions

The San Juan and surrounding region offers the finest year round Fly Fishing Guide Services (Walk Wade, Float Fishing & Drift Boat trips) in Western Colorado. Guide services are centrally located within one hour of 6 major trout streams and rivers (Uncompahgre, Gunnison, San Miguel, Cimarron and more) RIGS sits in the heart of the scenic San Juan Mountains near Ridgway, Ouray, Montrose and Gunnison.

Canyoning Excursions

 

Colorado’s flowing water canyons are a world-class destination for the sport of canyoning. Canyoning involves descending down a flowing water canyon using a mix of hiking, down climbing, and of course, rappelling the waterfalls!

Horseback Riding

Enjoy the San Juan and Cimarron Mountains on horse back, through majestic back-country trails that offer spectacular scenery

 

 

Bicycling

Complimentary in-town cruiser type bicycles are available at Chipeta resort.

Located just outside of Ridgway, Colorado, the Ridgway Trail System has evolved into a wonderful renewed resource for non-motorized trail users. The trail system is directly adjacent to the Ridgway State Park and encompasses over 20 miles of great single track trails with excellent views of the Ridgway Reservoir and San Juan Mountains. Durango – Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad winds through spectacular & breathtaking canyons in the remote wilderness of the two-million acre San Juan National Forest for an unforgettable year-round adventure. Experience the adventure of traveling by a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive on the same tracks miners, cowboys and settlers of the Old West took over a century ago. Relive history with the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a truly spectacular journey on board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Ouray County Museum

Be sure to save time for a visit to this outstanding historical museum with its variety of exhibits that appeal to children. If a rainy spell interferes with outdoor plans, visit the museum at 420 Sixth Avenue or call 325-4576.

 

Telluride Ski Resort Downhill Skiing

Telluride Ski Resort
With incredible views of the San Juan Mountains, home to more than 2,000 acres of lift-accessible terrain and named in Conde Nast top 5 north American ski resort, Telski boasts 4,425 feet of vertical, accessed via 19 lifts and 148 runs. With a lift-served elevation of 12,515 feet and a maximum elevation of 13,150 feet, the mountain has no trouble holding onto its snow – more than 280 inches of average snowfall. Telluride’s terrain ranges from beginner to intermediate, with four hike-to terrain areas for advanced and expert skiers. The ski area offers multiple terrain parks for all skill levels as well as 10 kilometers of Nordic skiing.

Heli Skiing

Back Country Skiing

Nordic Skiing

– Top of the Pines
Explore over 7 kilometers of groomed Nordic trails with gorgeous views all around you.

Top of the Pines is an outstanding outdoor recreation area and environmental education base camp, special events destination and open space preserve. Located at the foot of Sneffels Range in Southwest Colorado and in close proximity to Ouray, Ridgway and Telluride, this 175 acre wilderness jewel offers local communities and visitors a remarkable place to learn, recreate and celebrate while also providing an inspiring gathering place for everyone interested in exploring the beauty of the San Juans.

– Telluride Nordic Trails
Telluride offers six Nordic skiing areas in the immediate vicinity: Telluride Town Park, The Valley Floor, Telluride Golf Course, the Top of chair Ten “TopAten” Trout Lake and Priest Lake. Each offer different terrain, varied lengths of groomed trails and excellent views. The Telluride Nordic Association, through charitable donations and fundraising efforts, manages the trails and posts a daily grooming report. Pets are permitted in Mountain Village, Priest Lake and Trout Lake. Please sign in when visiting Trout Lake and Priest Lake.

The Nordic Center in Telluride Park offers cross-country rental equipment, trail maps for the area and lessons.e.

Silverton Mountain and Outback Terrain

Back Country skiing is the perfect activity for outdoor winter enthusiasts. combining downhill skiing with the physical challenge of traversing to 12,000 plus feet elevation either hiking or traveling via helicopter. 

For the extreme skiing enthusiast, Silverton Mountain offers guided skiing and snowboarding with elevations between 10,400 to 12,300 feet. Small groups of skiers are guided through up to five runs per day. Heli-skiing and Unguided skiing are available during the ski season. Please contact Silverton Mountain for more details.

Silverton Mountain requires reservations Thursday through Sunday, December through April. 

Ice Climbing

Ranked one of the most popular ice climbing parks in the world, Ouray Ice Park and surrounding mountains provide a wide variety of ice falls for all experience levels. Ouray Ice Park has designed and built an Ice Climbing Kids College for children, as well.

Competitors and spectators worldwide travel to the San Juan region, every January, to be a part of some of the world’s best ice climbing competitions at the Annual Ouray Ice Festival.

Snow Shoeing
