In 1970 Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson brought awareness to the public consciousness about air and water pollution which forced environmental protection onto the National political agenda. On April 22, twenty million Americans demonstrated for a healthy sustainable environment.
They had been fighting against oil spills, toxic dumps. pesticides and extinction of wildlife. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, CleanWater and Endangered Species Acts. In 1990 Earth Day went global with 200 million people in 141 countries. In 2000, the movement expanded to include 184 countries, focusing on global warming and clean energy and is now the largest celebrated civic event around the world.
So this Earth Day, get involved! There are so many ways – sign a petition, volunteer, put up solar panels, recycle, help plant a community garden, change a habit and choose to stay in green hotels when you travel.
We’re trying to do our part here at Chipeta Solar Spring Resort. We are committed to reducing our impact as well as help our guests reduce their footprint from travel. We have implemented solar thermal heated hot pools throughout the resort, passive solar space heating in guest rooms and common areas, low flush toilets, shower heads, recycling programs, evaporative cooling and a towel re-use program. Additionally we are members of the Green Hotel program.
HAPPY EARTH DAY!
