Colorado Fall Colors Paint the Scene for a Perfect San Juan’s Getaway

/ News

It’s autumn! And that means Southwestern Colorado colors are dazzling in shades of yellow, orange and red.

Fall colors are popping at higher elevations and Mother Nature displays beautiful fall leaves at all elevations in Southwestern Colorado, into mid-October.

If you are craving a road trip filled with a kaleidoscope of hues, the Million Dollar Highway is the perfect setting at many different elevations, along with quaint historic towns along the way. Or approximately six miles west of Ridgway, Highway 62 toward Telluride offers brilliant Fall landscapes, as well.  To experience a whole region of Fall colors travel along the amazing 236-mile San Juan Skyway Mountain loop where mountainsides are ablaze with orange and yellow.

After a day on what’s known as the “most beautiful byway in America,” quaff your thirst at Full Tilt Saloon, True Grit Cafe or Colorado Boy Pub & Brewery in Ridgway. Then relax in Chipeta Resort’s solar heated pools, both centrally located in the courtyard of the resort with stunning views of the Cimarron and San Juan Mountain ranges.

True Grit Takes Center Stage at the Old West Fest
It has been 50 years since the John Wayne classic, True Grit, was released. The famous director Henry Hathaway brought a cast and crew to Ridgway and Ouray County in the summer of 1968 to film much of the movie that made its way to theaters a year later.

Slated for Oct. 11-13, the first annual Ridgway Old West Fest will celebrate Ridgway’s brief transformation into Fort Smith, Arkansas for Wayne’s Rooster Cogburn role that earned “Duke” his only Academy Award.

Festival activities include a John Wayne look-alike contest, cowboy action shooting contest, train rides, children’s horse and pony rides, cowboy poetry and music, Western arts and crafts exposition, movies and horsemanship demonstrations.

As a Ridgway Old West Fest highlight, the Ridgway Christian Center will host a double feature showing of the original 1969 True Grit followed by the 1971 Spielberg movie, Duel. The latter stars longtime Ridgway resident Dennis Weaver. Admission for one or both is $3 for all ages, with showings at 6pm and 8pm.
