September is here, along with cooler temperatures, a dusting of first snow on the mountain peaks and the promise of golden Aspens with fiery reds and oranges dotting the landscape. Autumn descending upon the San Juan Mountains is something you must see with your own eyes – but we’ll try to describe it the best we can!

Maybe you’re after a strenuous hike in the mountains or seeking the perfect photograph of snow-capped Mt. Sneffels. Or a leisurely drive over Red Mountain Pass describes the perfect Autumn day for you. No matter the activity, mother nature will be putting on one of its finest performances in Ridgway, Colorado – come enjoy the show!

The Best Autumn Hikes Are Right In Our Back Yard

Ouray and San Juan County feature some of the most pristine hiking terrain in the United States. From beautiful easy walks through glowing Aspen trees to 14,000 foot dramatic mountain ranges. Here are a few of our favorites:

Owl Creek Pass is just a hop, skip and a little over an hour drive out of Ridgway, where you will be dazzled by thick groves of golden Aspens and plenty of look out points for photo seekers.

For a moderate stroll, Stealy Mountain North Trail will provide you with views of Courthouse and Chimney Peak.

For those looking for something more strenuous, Courthouse Trail will lead you up to Courthouse Peak, so you’re standing high above the golden world!

Heading the other direction out of Ridgway, the increasingly popular Blue Lakes Trail will lead you to a high alpine lake that almost
cannot be described in words – you need to see it with your own eyes!

This Is The Best Time Of Year For Amazing Photos in Ridgway and Surrounding Areas
Photographers travel far and wide to capture the Fall colors of the San Juan and Cimmaron mountain ranges.
Colorado Highway 62 will lead you up the Dallas Divide, which offers some of Colorado’s premier locations for fall photography. Just about 15 miles outside of Ridgway, you’ll find a viewpoint to your left, offering magnificent views of Mt. Sneffels with golden Aspens and a grand carpet of orange sagebrush dotting the landscape. Continue south on Highway 62 and take a left turn at the top Divide that will lead you to Last Dollar Road, with yet again, more brilliant fall colors and mountain views along the way!

Red Mountain Pass , also referred to as the Million Dollar Highway, is not for the faint of heart, boasting steep inclines and cliffs in one of the most dramatic highway experiences in the country. It’s along this road that you’ll encounter some of the most incredible autumn scenery that Colorado has to offer!
