The temperatures are rising and the amazing snow pack we received during this ski season is melting. This spring, the snow pack is at 158 percent of the average levels for this time of year, three times higher than last season. Snow pack is critical in Colorado, due to most of the state’s water, whether it is utilized for communities, businesses or farms, originating from the snow that falls each winter.
While the March 13 blizzard helped parts of the state, it’s been the relentless nature of subsequent storms that brought the snow pack numbers to unprecedented levels, according to Colorado water officials. The Upper Colorado River basins are seeing one of the best years ever, since officials began measuring snow pack.
Reservoirs are also expected to benefit from the deep snow with some systems such as Ridgway Reservoir and Blue Mesa, near Gunnison, are expected to regain normal storage levels. With the great amount of snow pack comes the awe-inspiring run-off to the Ouray County Rivers and waterfalls. May and June are amazing months to experience the rivers gorging and waterfalls waking up for the season.
