Jeeping to Historic Town of Tomboy Basin

/ News

A trip to the San Juan Mountains wouldn’t be complete without a jeeping excursion, especially during the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons. A short 15 minute drive to the nearby town of Ouray, will lead you to the Switzerland of America Jeep Tours. Aptly named, this region of Colorado has more fourteen thousand foot mountains concentrated in one region, than any other area within the Rock Mountains. You might even think you are in the Swiss Alps with the views you’ll encounter during the tour.

The Imogene Pass Tour will Depart from Ouray and head over to cross Box Canyon Gorge and Canyon Creek. Next you will drive through the lower historic district of Camp Bird Mine. Climbing in elevation up to Imogene Basin past the site of the Yellow Rose mine and a beautiful waterfall. Then, ascend above tree-line and experience ghost town area of the original Camp Bird, a major source of gold and silver in the 1800’s.

When you Summit Imogene Pass at over 13,100 feet, and experience panoramic views of distant high mountain peaks and the town of Telluride, you will understand why this is a once in a life time experience. On the trip back into Ouray, enjoy a historic narrative of the infamous Ft. Peabody and views of Ptarmigan lake. During Spring and Summer you will enjoy a wonderful trip for wildflowers and a variety of wildlife! During the Autumn months, the colorful leaves of the Aspen will be bright shades of yellow and fiery orange.
