Let It Snow!

/ News, Romance, Winter Recreation

Chipeta Resort is wearing white, with snow falling to make our southwest Colorado resort a winter wonderland. In fact, Telluride received nearly two feet of snow in the last week! That makes this the perfect time to visit Chipeta, with our winter packages and bounty of recreation making your Colorado ski vacation even more special.

Whether you’re into skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowmobiling or even winter ziplining, Chipeta is the perfect snowy springboard to all the magic of the season! Enjoy the small-town hospitality of Ouray and Ridgway, plus access to world-class skiing at nearby ski resorts in Telluride, Silverton and Durango. For a milder ride, Ouray’s own Lee’s Ski Hill offers a free towrope and some fun turns right in town.

Silverton Mountain

With 1,819 acres of bowls, chutes, cliffs and beautiful terrain in every direction, Silverton (SilvertonMountain.com) makes it a snap to avoid crowded slopes since the mountain limits the daily number of unguided skiers. In fact, most days see fewer than 80 skiers on the mountain.

Purgatory Resort

In the San Juan Mountains 25 miles north of historic downtown Durango, Purgatory (PurgatoryResort.com) finds skiers flocking to enjoy its 1,360 acres of skiable terrain, 10 lifts, 88 trails, 5 terrain parks and a 2,029-foot vertical drop. Ski addicts love the new high-speed detachable quad chairlift!

Telluride Ski Resort

Telluride (TellurideSkiResort.com) offers 2,000-plus acres of unmatched scenery and incredible terrain on nearly 130 trails. Be sure to catch the free gondola that travels from downtown Telluride to the center of Mountain Village.

Raging Recreation

Even if downhill skiing isn’t at the top of your winter recreation bucket list, you’ll still find plenty of fun in Ridgway, Ouray and Telluride.

If you’re tired of lift lines, icy conditions and just want a true backcountry experience, San Juan Scenic  (SanJuanJeepTours.com) shares the powder with snow-cat excursions in the San Juan Mountains. With exclusive mountaintop access, the company also handles snowmobile adventures, sledding, snowshoeing, winter ziplining and backcountry skiing.

San Juan Mountain Guides (MtnGuide.net) also offers backcountry skiing that blends the excitement of downhill skiing with the physical challenges and rewards of backcountry winter travel.

Or hit the scenic backcountry in Telluride on a dog sledding tour with Winter Moon Sled Dog Adventures (970-729-0058). With excitement fueled by teams of Alaskan huskies, you’ll explore snow-covered trails throughout the San Juan and Uncompahgre National Forests as you learn about the sport of mushing.

The mountains surrounding Ouray offer spectacular areas for both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. You’ll find both groomed and un-groomed trails geared to all experience levels. Ouray Nordic Council (OurayNordic.org) maintains trails in and around Ouray, including the gentle valley of Ironton that’s located eight miles south of town. Ironton also features the ultimate solitude of cross-country skiing beneath a full moon.

In Ridgway, you can enjoy Top of the Pines (TopOfThePines.org) open space preserve and retreat set on a high mesa meadow with an awesome view of Mt. Sneffels scenery. Or try Dave Wood Road that is closer to Montrose. Gear for rent or purchase is available at Ouray Mountain Sports (OurayMountainSports.com).

The surrounding San Juan Mountains also revs up with snowmobile adventures, with Red Mountain Snowmobile Tours (970-387-5512) taking you on a ride of a lifetime in the spectacular Molas Pass area that’s one hour south of Ouray. Telluride Outside (TellurideOutside.com) is another excellent option for ripping through the powder.

From mid-December through mid-March, Ouray is abuzz with ice climbing activity. In fact, Jim Donini, former president of the American Alpine Club, calls the Ouray Ice Park (OurayIcePark.com) “the best venue in the world to develop ice-climbing skills.”

The park is home to more than 200 ice and mixed climbs–most within a 15- to 30-minute walk from downtown Ouray. Hire an experienced local guide or attend one of the many seasonal clinics that address all skill levels.

The Ice Park is truly an engineering marvel with its design to utilize a gravity-fed plumbing system routing more than 150,000 gallons of water a night to create and maintain the famous blue ice.

Each winter, the admission-free park hosts the Ouray Ice Festival to raise funds for its operations that have made it one of the world’s premier ice climbing venues.

For gliding across ice instead of climbing it, ice skating is a quintessential southwestern Colorado winter activity. Check out Ouray’s free ice skating rink that is open throughout the winter as temperatures permit. Other options include Rotary Park on the north end of Ouray (970-325-7065), and Telluride Town Park that features both an outdoor venue and the indoor Andy Hanley Ice Rink. Skate rentals are available at the Telluride Nordic Center (970-728-1144).

So why wait? There’s so much to see and do in Ridgway, Colorado! And our Chipeta Resort winter vacation packages let you do so with more bang for your budget!
