San Juan Summer Last Hurrah

/ News

The kids are back in school, your vacation days are adding up and traveling is easy when it’s less crowded. Welcome to September in Southwestern Colorado! September is a perennial favorite for enjoying days that remain warm, taking in the breathtaking fall colors and ogling the first snows at higher elevations.

As summer winds down Southwestern Colorado continues to ramp up with events that take full advantage of pleasant weather and always gorgeous scenery. Chipeta Solar Springs Resort guests find themselves at the perfect springboard to this pre-autumn action playing out from Ridgway to Ouray and Telluride.

4×4 Frenzy
It’s hard to find anyone that doesn’t love a Jeep journey through Southwestern Colorado mountain passes. Tour operators remain open through September with most offering guided adventures through October. Or take off on your own with a Jeep rental to discover the history of Southwestern Colorado’s mountain mining ghost towns.

It’s a great time to book Chipeta Resort’s High Mountain Jeep Adventure Package including a half-day guided off-road trek, 50-minute therapeutic massage at Chipeta Resort’s full-service Spa and a $50 Four Corners Restaurant gift card.

Ouray County Fair and Labor Day Rodeo
Prepare for plenty of hooping and hollering Labor Day Weekend as the Ouray County Fair & Labor Day Rodeo hits the Ouray County Fairgrounds on Sunday, Sept. 1 and Monday, Sept. 2.

Aside from sanctioned rodeo events held from 1pm both days, guests can partake Sunday’s Cowboy Church Service and Fireman’s Dance, plus Monday’s 9am Parade and Labor Day BBQ in Town Park.

During the rodeo, competitors saddle up for such exciting contests as breakaway roping in divisions for cowgirls, juniors, mounted teams and open teams. The non-profit association organizing the rodeo dedicates its time and efforts to preserving ranching heritage by providing scholarships and education-focused financial support to area children.
