Winter Wonderland Festivals

If you time your Southwestern Colorado winter vacation just right, you can catch two huge festivals that are awesome for both spectators and participants.

On Jan. 13-14, San Juan Skijoring ( rolls out an action-packed weekend in Ridgway at the Ouray County 4H Events Center & Fairgrounds.

What is Skijoring, you ask? It’s the unique sport of a horse and rider pulling a skier at breakneck speeds around a snow track. Any skier, snowboarder or rider is welcomed to enter, and partake in the thrills and spills as spectators applaud the action while grazing on nosh from indoor and outdoor concession stands.

From Jan. 18-21, Ouray Ice Park ( is an absolute climbing mecca that draws novice and pro ice fans from across the globe. Hundreds of spectators line the top of the Gorge on Saturday and Sunday to watch top ice and mixed climbing talents battle it out.

Adding to the sport’s exposure are north of 100 interactive and educational climbing clinics, plus daily vendor exhibitions of the latest ice tools, apparel and gear from leading outdoor industry retailers. And as “icing on the cake,” nightly events heat up with multimedia presentations by top climbers, music, food, dance parties, and both a live and silent auction overflowing with screaming deals.

Tuning In

It’s hard to top the music you can plug into at the end of a high-energy day on the slopes in and near our Chipeta boutique resort in Ridgway, Colorado.

In fact, you don’t even have to leave Chipeta on Wednesdays and Fridays to enjoy live music. Our Four Corners Café features local artists and happy hour from 4-5pm Wednesday through Friday night.

At Ridgway’s hip Sherbino (, the January and February line up includes the soul-inspired sounds of Elder Grown (Jan. 13), “no frills” rock and roll of Strange Americans (Jan. 26), frequent Ride Festival performer Jeffrey Foucault (Feb. 8), smooth reggae of Niceness (Feb. 16) and modern hip-hop fusion of Lique (Feb. 23).

Doors typically open at 7:30pm, music begins around 8:00pm and admission is $10 at the door. Be sure to check the website for more details.

For a change of tune, Wright Opera House ( will host iconic vocalist Uxia Senlle performing the folk music of Galicia, Spain on Feb. 18.

While Telluride is known for its Bluegrass (June 21-24) and Brews & Blues (Sept. 14-16) festivals, the ski resort also engages live music aficionados with ample opportunities to warm up and chill out with winter tunes.

At the popular Sheridan Opera House (, enjoy a fun twist to Led Zeppelin with the all-female Lez Zeppelin tribute band (Jan. 4), electronic funk of The Floozies: Powder Rangers Tour 2 (Jan. 11-12), blugrass rooted Trout Steak Revival (Jan. 19), five-time GRAMMY award-winning Victor Wooten Trio (Jan. 21) and jamgrass-centric Leftover Salmon with Head for the Hills (Jan. 24).

At Telluride’s The Palm Theater (, January’s marque performer is Seth Walker (Jan. 27). Recognized as one of the most revered modern roots artists for his gospel-drenched voice, Walker has a true blue knack for getting around the guitar and gift for tapping into the American southern experience with his lyrics.
